Actor Louis Gossett Jr. has passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy in show business, which includes being the first black man to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1982 movie An Officer and a Gentleman.
The highly respected performer, who had graced screens since 1961, had an estimated fortune of between $5 and $10 million at the time of his death.
Gossett accumulated his impressive net worth from 200 film and television acting roles.
Before launching his acting career in the early 1960s, Gossett had served in the United States Air Force during the 1950s.
The renowned actor attributes his time in the military to teaching him discipline, which helped him achieve success in the entertainment industry, according to Just Speak.

Gossett later played a military Sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman.
He first gained widespread recognition from playing Fiddler in the 1977 miniseries Roots, which earned him a Daytime Emmy Award, and continued acting until his death Celebrity Net Worth reports.
Gossett sold his Malibu mansion for $3.25 million in 2018 before moving to Atlanta, Georgia. He had initially grown up on the East Coast as a Brooklyn, New York native.
The sale occurred in September, two months before Malibu wildfires would spread in November and destroy the property.

Gossett had spent 30 years living in the Southern California house.
He said: “I found out [about the fire] on television” and “mine was [a] tinderbox anyway,” NBC affiliate WXIA-TV reports.
Outside of acting, Gossett participated in humanitarian efforts, like creating the Eracism Foundation, which aims to eradicate racism, ignorance, and social apathy.
